9 days Rwanda Wildlife Adventure Tour
Overview
Embark on a 9-day cultural and wildlife experience in Rwanda. Discover the local customs and traditions of the Bahutu and Batutsi communities, including cow care, food preparation, and seasonal celebrations. Explore the breathtaking Volcanoes National Park, home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, with gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking experiences. Pay homage to the late American primatologist and conservationist, Dian Fossey, at her gravesite. Immerse in the culture with community interactions. End your journey with a final town tour in Kigali city before departing home.
Day 1: Arrive in Rwanda
Arrive in Kigali, Rwanda and head to the Serena Hotel. Check into a designated room with luxury amenities, including an executive lounge and bar, a newly renovated pool, a restaurant and café. Enjoy a relaxing day at the hotel.
Day 2: Kigali City Tour.
Start the day with a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi to commemorate the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Take a stroll in the memorial gardens for contemplation. Have lunch before heading to the Rwanda Arts Museum to learn more about the country’s history. The museum is part of the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda.
Day 3: Visit Akagera National Park.
Embark on an early morning game drive in the park, where you can spot a variety of wildlife such as waterbucks, topis, reedbucks, oribis, sitatunga, eland, giraffes, buffaloes, elephants, lions, and rhinos. After lunch, take a guided nature walk to see the wildlife up close. End the day with evening activities, such as clubbing at nearby bars and clubs.
Day 4: Boat Cruise and Fishing.
Take a morning boat cruise on Lake Ihem and spot a variety of marine life, including hippos, elephants, buffalos, warthogs, crocodiles, and water birds. Afterwards, engage in sport fishing on the same lake. The caught fish can be eaten or taken with you. Return to the lodge for the night.
Day 5: Cultural Tours and Birding.
Visit nearby local communities to learn about local customs, such as cow care, beer making, food preparation, and seasonal celebrations. Have lunch with the locals. Then, go on a bird-watching tour in the park and listen to the sweet melodies of various bird species. Return to the lodge to pick up your belongings and head to Volcanoes National Park.
Day 6: Visit to Volcanoes National Park.
Volcanoes National Park is located in northwestern Rwanda and includes five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains: Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo. It is home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, as well as other wildlife such as forest elephants, buffaloes, and various primates. The park borders Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda.
DAY 7: Gorilla Trekking & Mountain Hiking
Enjoy a full day of Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, home to mountain gorillas. After an early breakfast, hike through dense vegetation to find the gorillas in their natural habitat. Observe them for an hour during their daily activities. Have lunch at a local restaurant, then spend the rest of the day at leisure with an overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 8: Golden monkey tracking and Dian Fossy grave visit.
Embark on a morning hike to search for the endangered Golden Monkeys. Observe their behavior and ways of life in the bamboo forest at the bottom of the Virunga Mountains. After spending some time with the habituated monkeys, you will visit the grave of Dian Fossey, an American primatologist and conservationist known for her study of mountain gorillas. Hear her history and findings before returning to the lodge for an overnight stay.
Day 9: Interaction And Departure
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the lodge, then take a nature walk and visit the Bahutu and Batutsi communities to learn about their culture, norms, and customs. Interact with the locals, have lunch with them, and learn about the history of their country. In the afternoon, head to Kigali city and, if time allows, take a tour on motorbikes to see areas missed during earlier trips. Finally, fly back to your destination country.
