6 Days Volcanoes National park
Overview
DAY 1: IN THE CAPITAL OF RWANDA.
As soon as you touch down into Kigali city, swiftly whisk away to the legendary Serena hotel of Kigali with an executive lounge and bar, a newly refurbished swimming pool, a restaurant and café. Check-in into the designated room and spend sometime relaxing in the lavished rooms and spaccous ambience. Spend the entire day having leisure at the hotel.
DAY 2: ULTIMATE KIGALI CITY TOUR
After breakfast the next morning, whisk away after your morning breakfast to Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi, this memorial was put into place to commemorate the 1994 Rwandan genocide. The remains of over 250,000 people are interred there. This memorial also serves to educate about how the Genocide against the Tutsi took shape and examines genocide in the 20th century.
Walk straight to the memorial gardens after the touring of the memorial for quiet contemplation about the history of the Genocide against the Tutsi. They allow visitors to reflect on how we all have a personal responsibility to prevent discrimination and mass atrocity and end the tour of the memorial by supporting the survivors of the massive killing in particular the widows and orphans. Have lunch with them before leaving the area.
After such a very heart-wrenching experience have a luncg stop over and then enroute to the Rwanda arts museum to quench your historical curiosity. The Rwanda Art Museum is one of the eight museums that make up the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda. The museum was formerly known as the Presidential Palace Museum, this new museum displays contemporary artworks from Rwanda as well as abroad.
Have an insight into the originality of Rwandan creativity as you explore the development of art from olden times to the modern day, it considers how traditional and modern imaginations can blend and fuse. The flight debris from the presidential jet that went down on 6th April 1994 remain in situ in the garden and this will remain a heritage site. Return to the hotel and drive straight to the famous Virubga National park. Drive northwards, making your way through beautiful, terraced hillsides as you gradually ascend the base of the spectacular Virunga Volcanoes. Have an overnight stay at one of the lodges in the Park.
DAY 3: VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK
Volcanoes National Park is a national park in northwestern Rwanda. The park encompasses five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains, namely Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo.
It borders Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. It is home to the mountain gorilla and the golden monkey. Other animals found in the forest include, Forest elephants, buffaloes, bush pigs, giant forest hogs, duikers, spotted hyenas, bush-bucks and several primates.
DAY 4: MOUNTAIN HIKING AND GORILLA TREKKING
After a very early morning breakfast, engage in a full day excursion trek in the Volcanoes National park in seearch for the human’s closest relatives the Mt. Gorillas, Journey northwards through the dense vegetation as you climb to the base of the volcanoes where these animals are found in different groups.
It’s a very hectic and tiresome journey but a worth and exhilarating experience worth every minute spent in the hiking to the destination. After tracking endangered mountain gorillas through the mysterious intimacy of the rain forest, you will be allowed a full hour with these intelligent creatures as you analyze how they are interacting, playing, eating, grooming and going about their daily lives in their natural habitat. Have lunch in one of the local restaurants, return to your lodge and spend the rest of the day doing own leisure activities and have an overnight stay at the lodge.
DAY 5: GOLDEN MONKEY TRACKING AND DIAN FOSSEY GRAVE VISIT.
Very early in the morning after munching on your delish breakfast, hike and plod through the forest in search for the endangered golden monkeys to concede their ways of life and behavior. The Golden monkeys are one of Rwanda’s unique primate species found only in the Virunga Mountains c. Compared with other monkey species, the golden monkeys are gorgeous in appearance. They have bright colored fur with long golden hair mixed with orange. The Golden Monkey trek is one of the least strenuous activities in Volcanoes National Park.
The monkeys live at the bottom of the mountain range in the bamboo forest and terrain here is relatively flat and easy to trek. Basic fitness is therefore enough. On finding these habituated monkey species, you are allowed to spend sometime with them as you take photos.
Journey to the grave tombs of the most famous American primatologist and conservationist known for undertaking an extensive study of mountain gorilla groups from 1966 until her murder in 1985. She studied them daily in the mountain forests of Rwanda, initially encouraged to work there by paleoanthropologist Louis Leakey. Have a few minutes at her grave as you listen to her history with gorillas and her finds during the course of the study.
Return to the lodge for an overnight stay.
DAY 6: INTERACTION AND DEPARTURE
Waking up at your convenient time, have breakfast as you enjoy the early morning sunrays at your lodge, after which you will engage in short lived nature walk around the accommodation and later amble into the Bahutu and Batutsi communities of the area to enjoy their hospitable and welcoming nature.
Fully immerse yourself in their culture, norms and customs so as to have your culture curiosity satisfied. Move around their homesteads as you interacting with them. Have lunch in one of the local hotels with some of the locals after which you will relax for a moment as you jazz with the locals about the history of their country.
After such a wonderful experience, set your compass to Kigali city, and if you still have enough time, take another town tour on motorbikes so that you can explore all the areas you wouldn’t have seen when in motor vehicles. Then set your compass to home and board your flight to the agreed drop off country.
