2-Day Uganda Birding Safari-Mabamba Swamp offers a chance to learn a lot about the several bird species that set Uganda apart as one of the best birding destinations in Uganda.
The 2-day Uganda birding safari will have you visiting the best bird habitats nearest to Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. Entebbe Botanical Gardens, Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC), and the renowned Ramsar site of Mabamba Swamp in Entebbe.
Mabamba Bay Wetland System, located in the Wakiso and Mpigi districts, covers an area of 2,424 hectares. It sits at coordinates 00°07’N 032°21’E and is renowned as an Important Bird Area.
This wetland is like a vast marsh that stretches along a narrow and long bay, surrounded by papyrus plants, leading to Lake Victoria. It’s unique as the only swamp near Kampala where you can easily spot the globally threatened Shoebill stork.
This special place is home to nearly 190,000 birds on average. Mabamba is a vital part that houses around 38% of the world’s Blue Swallow population. Observe other birds of global conservation concern like the endangered Papyrus Yellow Warbler.

Day 1: Airport pick up and Entebbe Wildlife Education Center (UWEC)
Depending on the time of your arrival in Uganda at Entebbe airport, you will be picked up from the airport by a professional guide. Check-in into your booked hotel in Entebbe, Tahfeez Tours and travel always makes sure that your comfort is not compromised.
Have time to relax and refresh at your hotel. Depending on the time of your arrival, you can visit the Uganda Wildlife Center (UWEC). Be assured to enjoy several bird species as UWEC harbors over 170species of birds including; the north masked weaver, orange weaver, sunbirds, and kingfishers among others.
You can also enjoy the zoo where you can get to see the lions, gorillas, giraffes snakes among other animals.
By evening, you will be dropped back at your hotel where you will have dinner, relaxation, and a night’s rest.
For the evening at the hotel, as an optional choice, you can enjoy the lodge amenities like the spa area for massage, steam bath, or sauna for wellness’ sake.
Day 2: Shoebill at Mabamba Swamp and botanical gardens
This is the second day of your 2-day Uganda birding safari. In the morning, you will have a hearty breakfast at your hotel and then embark on the journey to Mabamba Island. You will enjoy the nature walk in the wetland tracking the shoe bill.
Reaching Mabamba, a distance by motor engine boats is also an epic voyage. The way the sailer navigates through Mabamba swamp marsh via tunnels is mesmerizing.
Along the way, have a chance to see several swamp birds like the swamp flycatcher, and orange weaver birds, papyrus gonolek, red cap, white-winged warbler, weyns weaver, goliath heron, blue warrows among others.
Spend time with the shoebill, taking photos as the magnificent bird tactfully waits for its prey among the marshes.
From the thrilling shoe bill watching in mabamba swamp, head back to Entebbe where you will have your lunch.
Thereafter, head for the botanical garden for watching birds like the woodpecker, malachite, cuckoos, and turacos, among other 150 species of birds.
In the evening hours, you can enjoy visiting the beach in entebbe, or enjoy the Entebbe evening tour depending on your stay.
